City Church Membership

“…You are a member of God’s very own family… and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.” Eph. 2:19 (LB)

Thank you for your interest in becoming part of the City Church family. The information below provides a brief introduction to the meaning of membership at City Church. We have two membership classes a year. The first is a two-part class offered in late January (usually on consecutive Wednesday evenings) and the second is an extended class offered in late July on a Saturday morning. The class is designed to clearly explain who we are and what we believe. It is also our hope that this class will help you to understand what it means to be committed to this local church body and serve as a gateway to an intentional process of spiritual growth.

Church Membership

Because of past experiences the phrase “church membership” can mean many different things to different people – so let’s define what we mean and don’t mean.

What Church Membership Doesn’t Mean

  • Doesn’t entitle you to any special services, privileges or rights.
  • We won’t be checking to see if you’re in church on Sunday.
  • We won’t be pressuring you to serve.
  • We won’t be keeping track how much money you give (except for tax purposes).

What Church Membership Means

  • It is simply our way of identifying who is in our family.
  • As a family member you are making a commitment to be a part of a smaller family group called a Connect Group (Connect Groups under the “Ministry” heading).
  • Membership identifies who we are linking arms with to share in what God has called us to do in and through this local body.
  • We won’t be keeping track how much money you give (except for tax purposes).

Additional Thoughts About Membership

Membership swims against the current of America’s “consumer religion”. We live in an age where very few people want to be committed to anything. Our culture has produced a generation of “shoppers” and “hoppers”.

It is a way or putting down your roots. In a sense you are saying, “This is my home. I want to be a part of this church family. This is where I belong. This is where I want to grow. This is where I want to serve.

By becoming a member you are agreeing to come into intentional relationship with this family where you will get to know others and allow them to get to know you – where you will have the privilege of receiving from the family and the honor of giving back to the family.

As a member, you have a valuable part to play in what God is building. Although our roles may differ, they are equal in value. Each one of us is desperately needed for the body to be healthy and function as God desires. We want you to know that you are not just a name on a list, but you are a vital member of the City Church family.

What Membership Involves

  1. Protecting the unity of my church: by acting in love toward others, by refusing to gossip, and by supporting the leadership
  2. Sharing the responsibility of my church: by praying for its growth and health, by inviting people to attend, and by warmly welcoming those who visit.
  3. Serving in the ministry of my church: by discovering my gifts and talents, by being equipped to serve, and by developing a servant’s heart.
  4. Supporting the testimony of my church: by attending faithfully, by living a godly life, and by giving regularly.
  5. Participating in a Connect Group: by committing to a group and by developing and using your gifts to serve others. (See Connect Groups under the “Ministry” heading).
